Marbil vows to dismiss 2 cops in viral Davao City assault video

Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil, chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), vowed to dismiss from the service the two policemen who were seen in the viral video allegedly showing Rep. Paolo Duterte physically assaulting a man inside a bar in Davao City.

Marbil said the two police sergeants were already asked to explain but opted to surrender their firearms and identification cards and went on AWOL (absent without official leave).

“They are not authorized (as police security), they were moonlighting (as bodyguards),” said Marbil, as he confirmed the ongoing investigation into their personnel over unauthorized police security deployment.

The two policemen, one has a rank of Police Executive Master Sergeant while the other one is a Police Staff Sergeant, were assigned to two police stations in Davao City.

Aside from the two cops, two other ‘”bodyguards” were seen in the video and Marbil confirmed that they are members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP)—a police report revealed that the two soldiers are from the Philippine Air Force. 

“Aside from the two policemen, their commanders will also be discharged,” said Marbil.

He cited the case of two members of the PNP’s elite Special Action Force who were caught moonlighting as security officers for executives of the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) last year.

A total of 11 SAF members, including an officer with a rank of Police Lieutenant Colonel, were dismissed from the services for allegedly conniving to send SAF men as POGO security.

“Every day, we submit an accounting of personnel reports. This moonlighting will not happen if they will not falsify their report. So aside from these two policemen who moonlighted in Davao, expect that their commanders will also be discharged,” said Marbil.  

He said they will also file administrative cases wherein the penalty is perpetual disqualification from holding any position in the government.

“This should serve as a warning to all our policemen to make sure that you take your job seriously,” said Marbil.
