Manila mayoral bet Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso and his running mate, vice mayoralty candidate Chi Atienza, have been endorsed by the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) religious group for the upcoming May midterm elections.
Although the endorsement was not publicly announced by the INC, the endorsement was confirmed by sources familiar with the decision.
The INC endorsed 26 members of the former mayor's slate gunning for positions in the Manila City Council.
The church's endorsement and voting in unity are seen to give Domagoso and Atienza a significant edge over their rivals.
In his Facebook Live, Domagoso expressed his gratitude to the INC and its leader Eduardo Manalo for their endorsement.
He vowed to make his campaign promises a reality such as ridding the city of trash, supporting the elderly and youth of Manila, and curbing the rise of criminality that is affecting the businesses and livelihood of Manileños.
"Sa ating mga kapatid sa Iglesia ni Cristo, sa ating mga batang Maynila, sa ating mga minamahal na lolo at lola, sana po sa tulong ninyong lahat ay muli nating maibalik ang katatagan ng ating minamahal na lungsod (To our brothers and sisters in Iglesia ni Cristo, to the children of Manila, to our beloved grandparents, I hope that with the help of all of you, we can restore the stability of our beloved city)," Domagoso noted.
On April 29, Domagoso maintained his commanding lead in the latest OCTA Research survey in the capital city's mayoralty race.
Conducted from April 20 to 23, the survey showed a 63 percent voter preference for Domagoso, far ahead of his rivals, incumbent Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna (18 percent) and Rep. Sam Versoza (16 percent).
While Lacuna gained only three percent from her previous rating of 15 percent, this is still within the margin of error of +/-3% of the OCTA Research survey.
The former mayor is also leading in all six districts of Manila.
Team Kakampi
The INC also endorsed Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval and former Congressman Ricky Sandoval.
The endorsement that the Sandovals received will further strengthen their bid for re-election and return to public office, respectively, as they lead the “Team Kakampi” slate in the May 12 polls.
Sandoval expressed her gratitude to the INC for their unwavering support for their candidacy and public service to Malabuenos.
"Laking pasasalamat po natin sa Iglesia ni Cristo sa kanilang pag-endorso sa atin at sa ating mga Kakampi para sa ating pagtakbo bilang alkalde ng Malabon. Ito po ay magsisilbing inspirasyon at lakas natin sa pagpapatuloy ng tapat na pagseserbisyo (We are deeply grateful to the Iglesia ni Cristo for their endorsement of our candidacy and that of our allies in our bid for the mayoralty of Malabon. This expression of support will serve as a source of inspiration and strength as we continue to uphold honest and dedicated public service for our constituents),” she said.
“Makasisiguro po kayo na ang suporta po ninyo at ng bawat kababayang Malabueno ay hindi masasayang dahil mas pag-iigihan pa po natin ang pagbibigay ng napapanahong mga programa para sa pangangailangan ng lahat (You can be assured that your support—and that of every Malabon resident—will not go to waste, as we will further strengthen the delivery of timely programs that address the needs of all),” Sandoval added.
Meanwhile, former Congressman Ricky Sandoval is best known as the principal author of Republic Act 9019, which converted Malabon into a highly urbanized city in 2001—laying the foundation for enhanced local governance and services.
