Man who robbed bank in Taguig arrested

The robbery happened at about 3:36 p.m. inside the Veterans Bank in Barangay Western Bicutan in Taguig. The suspect was arrested by elements from the Taguig police, SWAT and  Tactical Motorcycle Riding Unit. 

Regional Director Major Gen. Anthony Aberin of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), acting Southern Police District chief Brig. Gen. Joseph Arguelles,  and Taguig police chief Col. Joey Goforth held a press briefing at the Southern Police District headquarters in Taguig. 

The police said the suspect, identified as Bernard, a regular client of the bank, was able to bring a gun inside the facility as the guards no longer inspected his bag. 

Goforth said the suspect, 54, is unemployed but is managing the bank account of his father. 

Inside the bank, the suspect asked the guard if he could use the comfort room. The suspect was able to use the comfort room three times. On the third time, he came out of the comfort room with the gun and wearing a bonnet, and declared a holdup. 

He threatened the tellers and told them not to scream. One of the tellers pushed the alarm button that was connected to the nearest police station. 

The responding police asked the guards if there was holdup going on in the bank but they said no. Unconvinced, the police peered through the glass partition and saw a man with a gun. 

A teller was able to escape from an exit at the back of the bank that allowed the police to enter the branch. 

The police wrestled with the suspect, who was eventually subdued. The police said money, totaling P7,464,800, was already placed in a bag. The police recovered a gun–a 9mm Armscor– and the money from the suspect. 

Goforth said at the time, the bank employees were counting money to be loaded into the automated teller machine. 

The suspect ordered the tellers to place the money in his bag. Not satisfied with the money he got, he ordered bank employees to get money from the vault, which was open at the time, he added. 

Goforth said according to the suspect, he robbed the bank as he was experiencing financial difficulty. 

The police will file a complaint for robbery with force and intimidation, and violations of the election gun ban and Republic Act 10591 (Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act) against the suspect.
