Easy hacks to keep your home cool

Keep your cool while staying indoors with these simple tips

The hot and dry weather is expected to continue in May and June with high temperatures. To beat the heat, we are advised to avoid direct sun exposure and stay indoors as much as possible. While it may be ideal to seek refuge in our air-conditioned homes, there are plenty of practical ways to keep your household cool and comfortable.

Keeping the household cool is easy with simple techniques.

Simple cooling techniques

To keep harsh sunlight out of your homes, you may install blackout curtains on your windows to reduce the heat. You can lightly spritz the curtains with ice-cold water to help lower room temperature.

Indoor plants can help cool the air through transpiration and improve indoor air quality. So, place indoor plants in your homes for cooler temperatures and a comfortable vibe.

It also helps to replace incandescent bulbs with LED light bulbs, which emit less heat and are energy-efficient.

Improve home ventilation

To reduce indoor temperatures, ensure your home has good ventilation to allow air to circulate freely. You can use portable fans to enhance airflow and provide personal cooling.

Install exhaust fans in areas like the kitchen and bathroom to expel hot air and moisture, thus improving overall air circulation.

You may also place a damp towel or an ice bowl in front of a fan to encourage the circulation of cool air in the household.

Clean your home regularly to reduce clutter and dust. A clean and organized environment encourages free airflow.

Manage heat sources

Try to limit the use of heat-producing appliances such as ovens, stoves, and hot iron, especially during peak heat hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Their continued use adds to indoor heat build-up.

It also helps to unplug electronic devices when not in use to prevent the release of unnecessary heat in the household.

Install heat-reflective roofing materials to repeal the heat and maintain a cooler indoor temperature.
