1st Lt. Dan Carlo Samoza, civil-military officer of the Army 79th Infantry Battalion, said they were conducting focused military operations in the area following a Feb. 13 encounter when they engaged seven communist rebels past 1 a.m.

The fatalities were a man and a woman who held top positions on the regional level and part of the Komiteng Rehiyon-Negros Cebu Bohol Siquijor.

Samoza did not disclose their pending clearing operations. He said their remains have yet to be claimed by their families.

On Feb. 13, the 79th IB thwarted an extortion attempt by the NPA ahead of the May 12 midterm elections.

Samoza said that a finance officer of the dismantled Northern Negros Front was wounded and subversive documents containing valuable intelligence were recovered.
