Retrofitting efforts to address structural concerns in the Cabagan-Santa Maria Bridge were undertaken under the Marcos administration, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said on Tuesday, Mar. 4.
DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan clarified that the bridge’s design and construction were completed before the current administration took office.
However, retrofitting was later implemented to address structural issues identified in its original design.
“The retrofitting was conducted under this administration to correct deficiencies detected in the past, ensuring the bridge meets safety standards and remains durable for long-term use,” Bonoan said.
His statement follows the collapse of the bridge’s third segment on Feb. 27, prompting the DPWH to deploy engineers and third-party consultants to assess the extent of the damage.
An ongoing investigation seeks to determine the necessary repairs, associated costs, and any accountability for the incident.
Malacañang has assured the public that appropriate actions will be taken based on the investigation’s findings.
