Former world champion Marlon Tapales continued to regain his confidence after beating lesser-known Indian rival Saurabh Kumar via unanimous decision to retain his World Boxing Council (WBC) Asian Continental super bantamweight title at the National Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia late Saturday, Sept. 7.

Tapales, 32, flashed his fiery form to take the fight out of his Indian rival in their 10-round bout.
The victory improved the Filipino fighter’s professional record to 39-4 spiked by 20 knockouts while Kumar absorbed his second defeat against 11 wins and one draw.
As expected, the battle-scarred Tapales threw a flurry of punches more than Kumar in the early minutes of the bout.
But that didn’t deter Kumar as he tried to match the Lanao del Norte standout, only his weren’t powerful enough to destroy the Filipino pug.
The win served as a springboard for Tapales’ future matches, with hopes of gaining another title shot next year.
Japanese Naoya Inoue shattered Tapales’ dream of bringing home four belts with a 10th-round knockout victory in their 12-round super bantamweight unification battle last December in Japan.
After their big-time clash, Inoue won his two consecutive fights and so was Tapales, who was coming off this bout against Kumar with a first-round TKO victory over Thai Nattapong Jankaew in Midas Hotel and Casino in Pasay City last May.
