Coney Reyes recalls funny moment about son Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto when he was young
At a glance
Actress Coney Reyes expressed her gratitude to her son, Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto, for his unwavering support as she marks her 50th anniversary in show business.
During a recent appearance on Fast Talk With Boy Abunda on GMA Network, Coney mentioned that she does not interfere in her son's love life.
"Marami talagang nagkakagusto (sa kanya)," admitted Coney when asked about son Vico. However, the actress stated that she takes a hands-off approach when it comes to her son's romantic matters. "Hindi. Nakita mo ba ever?"
Coney, 71, mentioned that some of her friends tried to set up her son with single girls, but she wasn't interested.
"May mga nagsasabi, 'Tita ipapakilala namin si ganito or ganyan.' Sabi ko, 'Sorry hindi ako nakiki-alam.' Sabi nila ang strikta raw ako. Sabi ko, 'Strict?' Kung strict ako bawal," the actress said.
(There are those who say, 'Tita, we will introduce this or that.' I said, 'Sorry I don't know.' They said I was strict. I said, 'Strict?' If I'm strict, I would not allow it.)
Coney admitted that in the past she would ask him if he had a girlfriend, but not anymore. "Noon noon ginawa ko 'yun pero ayoko na."
She added: "He had girlfriends mga classmates niya before. Mga ganyan. And they would all go out as a group. But I know I raised my children na meron silang fear of God. They know what they're doing."
Mayor Vico, 35, is the son of Coney and actor-television personality Vic Sotto. Coney is also the mother to Lawrence Anthony Mumar and Carla Mumar, with former husband basketball star Lawrence Mumar.
Coney affirmed that her three children share a harmonious relationship.
The actress also expressed gratitude to Vico for being understanding all these years.
"Thank you for understanding mama. Thank you for putting sense into mama's head many times when I'm not thinking straight," Coney said when asked for a special message for her son.
Coney said she does not expect her son Vico to be in public service.
"When he became a councilor, nagulat ako eh. I know he doesn't make decisions overnight. He consults, he prays. I'm so blessed. I'm so proud. I want to encourage him, and he's on the right track. God is with him," she added.
Coney recalled a funny incident when Vico was still a boy. When the phone rang, she signaled a household member to tell the caller when she was not around.
"Mama, you lied. Why did you tell Emy you are not here? You are here. Parang ganun. So sabi ko, 'Yes! I'm sorry. I was wrong. I shouldn't have said that. Sabi ko, 'I'll never do it again.'
"So ngayon kapag may tatawag, hayaan mo lang siya ring ng ring. Walang sasagot ng telepono. Kapag masungit ako, may son will reprimand me," she laughed.
Coney celebrates her 50th anniverasary in showbiz this year. Before becoming the host of popular noontime shows "Student Canteen" and "Eat Bulaga," Coney started as a promotional ad girl with a salary of P60.00. And the rest is history.
