Metro Pacific targets municipal sewerage systems

Metro Pacific Water Solutions (MPWS), a unit of Metro Pacific Investments Corporation, sees strong potential for growth in the wastewater management business as it has currently tapped less than 10 percent of the market.

MPWS President and CEO Christopher Andrew B. Pangilinan said in an interview they are looking at providing wastewater or sewage systems for Iloilo and Dumaguete which they are currently serving in the area of water distribution.

“That's one of the areas that we're looking at because, right now, they don't have a municipal (sewerage) system so they're working closely with us to put in one (sewage treatment plant) there,” he added.

Pangilinan explained that, without STPs, septic tanks are normally drained and the waste is just dumped into the ocean or any body of water. On the other hand, MPWS treats it first so that the cleaned water can be safely discharged.

However, Pangilinan said they also need to acquire new technology to increase efficiency, to expand their capacity, and so that they can cater to the needs of more clients.

“We’re looking at new technology because of the rapid evolution of both water and wastewater treatments. So we’ve been going around talking to several technology partners as we try to expand the capacity of the company,” he added.

“We’ve been doing MBR (membrane bioreactor) for the longest time but it’s an old technology so we’re looking at several new ones, specially for our market here, locally. 

“One concern, always, with sewage treatment plants, is the space that is needed. So we’re looking at new technologies that cam be more compact, more suitable for our market here,” said Pangilinan.

With 30 years in the business, MPWS is engaged with small scale, large scale, and municipal wastewater systems. It has designed and built around 700 plants for its customers and has been operating more than 100 sewage treatment plants nationwide.

Its clients range from zoos to commercial establishments such as malls and also builds STPs for affiliate Maynilad Water Services Inc. “They have two sewage treatment plants that we are now upgrading to their system and producing recycled water,” said Pangilinan.

Most of the firm’s business now is B to B (business to business) and it has several contracts with SM Malls, Walter Mart as well as PLDT.
