'Wonder Boy' Martin scores TKO win in overseas debut

Carl Jammes Martin made a successful overseas debut, scoring an impressive second round technical knockout victory over Mexican Anthony Jimenez Salas in their non-title super bantamweight bout in Sinaloa, Mexico on Saturday, Sept. 7 (Manila time).

The 25-year-old Ifugao warrior floored the Mexican twice before pummeling him down with vicious blows to convince the referee to stop the fight midway through the second round.

It was the first victory for Martin outside the Philippines since he moved to the US six months ago to begin his chase for a shot at a world title.

Martin improved his perfect record to 24-0 with 19 knockouts while sending Salas to his 10th loss against 18 wins (5 KOs).

The No. 3 ranked in the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and No. 6 in the International Boxing Federation (IBF) first caught Salas with a left straight that sent the Mexican into the ropes.

Martin then unloaded a combination to the head before detonating a left uppercut that sent Salas kneeling down to the canvas.

He managed to get back up and still fought Martin but he was caught by another left that knocked him down for the second time.

Sensing blood in the water, Martin went for the kill as soon as Salas got back up, staggering him with a left to the body and the right to the head.

Martin then landed blows after blows as Salas seemingly already pulled his punches, enough for the referee to stop the bout.
