The Quezon City local government on Saturday, September 7, urged the QCitizens to take precautionary measures against mpox following the detection of two more cases.
According to the city government, it detected the second and third cases of mpox in the city on August 30 and September 5.
The city’s Epidemiology and Surveillance Division (QCESD) confirmed that the second case is a 29-year-old male, while the third is a 36-year-old male.
The said patients are currently undergoing home isolation and taking necessary medical care.
QCESD said that the 29 year-old patient began showing symptoms, including a mouth lesion on August 21 and sought medical attention on the following day.
He was tested on August 28, and confirmed that he is mpox positive on August 30.
Meanwhile, the 36 year-old male, experienced fever on August 26 and had developed a rash on August 27. His specimen was sent to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM), and he was confirmed positive on September 5.
City Mayor Joy Belmonte urged the residents to take preventive measures against the mpox.
“Hindi biro ang mpox. Malala ang epekto nito, lalo na sa mga taong mahina ang immune system kaya napakahalaga na tayo mismo ay mag-ingat para hindi makakuha ng virus, at hindi tayo makahawa pa. Ugaliin pa rin ang paghuhugas ng kamay, at lumayo sa mga taong nagpapakita ng sintomas ng mpox (Mpox is no joke. Its effects can be severe, especially for those with weakened immune systems, which is why it's so important for us to take precautions to avoid getting the virus and spreading it to others. Make it a habit to wash your hands regularly and stay away from people who show symptoms of mpox),” she said.
“Kung may sintomas kayo ng mpox, agad nang pumunta sa pinakamalapit na health center o ospital para magpatingin. Hindi namin kayo papabayaan at handang tumulong ang lokal na pamahalaan para sa inyong mabilis na pagpapagaling (If you have symptoms of mpox, go to the nearest health center or hospital immediately for a check-up. We will not neglect you, and the local government is ready to assist in your speedy recovery),” Belmonte added.
Belmonte also mentioned that the QCESD has begun the contact tracing and is closely monitoring individuals who have been exposed to the patients.
The city reported its first case two weeks ago, a 37 year-old man who is currently receiving treatment and undergoing home quarantine.
In response to the outbreak, the local government has established its QC Task Force MPOX under the Executive Order 14, Series of 2024.
