Dazzling performances usher in brand-new collegiate season

Dazzling performances from topnotch local artists, the customary parade of athletes, and all the other colorful and extravagant displays that adorned two separate venues ushered in the brand-new season of collegiate action Saturday, Sept. 7.

The University of Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) officially raised the curtains at the Smart Araneta Coliseum and the Mall of Asia Arena, respectively, symbolizing the start of months-long campaign from member-schools across Manila with highlights on basketball, volleyball, and the highly anticipated cheerdance competition.

The UAAP kicked off its 87th edition with University of the Philippines as its host, giving the fans the nostalgia of 1990s hits with no less than the famous band Eraserheads, led by vocalist Ely Buendia, playing "Ang Huling El Bimbo" and "Magasin".

Other artists were present as well including Slapshock guitarist Lean Ansing, Franco bassist Dave Delfin, and Moonstar88’s drummer Bon Sundiang and vocalist Maysh Baay.

“The University of the Philippines opens the Season 87 as hosts by sending a message to the world that together, we can be stronger and better as schools, as a community, as a nation, and as citizens of the world,” said UP president Atty. Jijil Jimenez.

Eight universities paraded their student-athletes with Season 86 Athlete of the Year swimmer Quendy Fernandez of UP leading the Oath of Sportsmanship.

The Battle of Katipunan, which featured the Ateneo Blue Eagles and the UP Fighting Maroons, is being played as of press time.

Meanwhile at the MOA Arena in Pasay City, NCAA unfolded its centennial season, honoring its notable players from 10 participating schools including cagers CJ Perez (Lyceum), Baser Amer (San Beda), RJ Jazul (Letran), Adrian Nocum (Mapua), Allyn Bunaladi (San Sebastian), and Sidney Onwubere (EAC); trackster Mark Harry Diones (JRU); spikers Louie Ramirez (Perpetual) and Regine Arocha (Arellano); and table tennis ace Ryan Jacolo (CSB).

The 10 notable athletes graced the opening of the grand old league where they received a plaque of recognition.

Defending champion San Beda is battling Lyceum at 2:30 p.m., while College of St.Benilde is scheduled to face Mapua University at 5 p.m.
