PPA funds more projects to improve Philippine port operational efficiency, security
The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has started pouring more funds for strategic investments in port infrastructure that focuses on enhancing capacity and operational efficiency, particularly on the aspect of responding to security threats.
PPA General Manager Jay Daniel Santiago said one of the priorities is the safety and security of port facilities through a comprehensive approach that includes preventive measures against terrorism, piracy, and smuggling.
One of the key initiatives, according to Santiago, is the construction of Law Enforcement Buildings (LEB) at critical PPA ports, starting with the Port of Currimao in Ilocos Norte.
“These facilities streamline coordination between PPA and other government agencies like the Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Customs, and Philippine National Police, enhancing the government’s ability to detect, prevent, and respond to security threats,” said Santiago.
He said part of the ongoing projects to strengthen port security is the recent inauguration of the PPA- Philippine Coast Guard K9 Academy in Pampanga, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia.
This academy, according to Santiago, specializes in training, breeding, and providing veterinary care for K9 units, which assist the PCG in detecting narcotics, explosives, and smuggling at ports which are crucial hubs for trade.
The PPA chief also committed to complying with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code by implementing robust security measures across all port operations to address potential threats.
He said the initiative is reinforced by advanced security technology, including additional CCTV cameras, x-ray machines, metal detectors, and a heightened presence of port police and security personnel.
“Collectively, these actions enhance port safety, conform to international standards, and help prevent illegal activities,” said Santiago.
“By enhancing port capacity and operational efficiency, the PPA stimulates economic activity locally and nationally, fostering growth across various sectors,” he added.
