Gov't on top of situation as typhoon Julian batters Luzon—Marcos


Healthcare centers are on high alert and family food packs have been readied for those who will be affected by Typhoon Julian, President Marcos said.

Marcos assured the public that the government is closely monitoring the movement of the typhoon as it intensifies while moving northwestward.

"So, we are just watching it and seeing what will be needed pagkatapos pagdaan ng bagyo. Hanggang sa ngayon mayroon lang talagang (after the typhoon passes. Until now there are) --- we’re still having to wait for the water to come down," Marcos said in an interview in Tarlac on Monday, Sept. 30.

"Mag-intensify pa ito (This will further intensify). So, we’ll have to watch until it’s finished," he added.

In his speech during the inauguration of the StB Giga Factory in Tarlac, the President said that concerned government agencies are constantly working to ensure the safety of typhoon-hit residents.

“[T]he government is working [tirelessly] behind the scenes,” he said.  “Thousands of family food packs are now being prepared, healthcare centers are on high alert, and our farmers and fisherfolk are taking steps to safeguard their livelihoods."

Marcos also emphasized that the government is ensuring that the Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, the National Capital Region (NCR), and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) will be typhoon resilient.

In its latest bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Typhoon Julian is moving northwestward with maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 240 km/h.

Typhoon Signal No. 4 was hoisted over Batanes and the northern portion of Babuyan Islands while Typhoon Signal No. 3 was raised in the rest of Babuyan Islands and the northeastern portion of mainland Cagayan (Santa Ana) and Signal No. 2 over the rest of mainland Cagayan, Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, Ilocos Norte, and the northern and central portions of Ilocos Sur (Sinait, Cabugao).

The rest of Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Ifugao, Mountain Province, Benguet, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Aurora, the northern and eastern portions of Nueva Ecija (Cuyapo, Rizal, Laur, Pantabangan, Science City of Muñoz, Gabaldon, Carranglan, San Jose City, Lupao, Talugtug, Bongabon, Llanera, Talavera, Palayan City, General Mamerto Natividad), and Polillo Islands were placed under Signal No. 1.

Prior to his engagement at the StB Giga Factoryin Tarlac, Marcos also told residents to brace for the typhoon, assuring them that government is ready to render the necessary relief and assistance.

“Mag-ingat po tayong lahat. Atin pong ipatuloy ang binabantayan na Bagyong Julian, at handang magbigay ang pamahalaan ng tulong sa ating mga kababayang nangangailangan (Let us all be safe. We are continuously monitoring the typhoon, and we stand ready to provide assistance to those who will be affected),” the President said in speech during the distribution of certificates of condonation to thousands of farmers in Tarlac.
