Far Eastern University finally saw the end of its dry spell after surviving Ateneo de Manila in overtime, 66-65, in the UAAP Season 87 on Sunday, Sept. 29.
The Tamaraws, who had to endure five straight losses to start the men's tournament, had to do the "extra work" to get the job done.
“We're just doing our extra work and tinrabaho talaga namin.’Yong mga extra work namin, actually, nag-shootaround pa po kami kaninang umaga kasi ‘yon ‘yong turo ni coach Sean (Chambers) eh,” said Jorick Bautista, who came off the bench to lead FEU with 18 points.
“He wants us to get used to shooting before training, kasi sobrang laking tulong, which is lumabas nitong laro and nagbunga ‘yong pagod namin sa training,” he added.
Indeed, it worked as Bautista cashed in 14 of his 18 points in the fourth and extra periods to carry the load for the Tamaraws.
Also starring for the squad were Royce Alforque (12), Mo Konateh (10), Janrey Pasaol (10) and Veejay Pre (10).
What also impressed Chambers was the way his rookies played under his new system.
“Like I said in previous interviews, that it's gonna take some time because these guys are so young. I think the expectations put on them right now, we gotta make sure that it's fair,” said Chambers. “Because we knew it was gonna take some time, not only are these guys getting used to playing at this stage, they're learning my system, I'm learning the system of the UAAP.”
