Sexagenarian tricycle driver killed in collision


BACOLOD CITY – A 67-year-old man died in a collision between a truck and tricycle in Barangay III-Poblacion, Pontevedra, Negros Occidental on Sunday, September 1.

Police identified the victim as Paterno Belleza of Barangay Mandalagan here.

Police Major Romulo Gepilango, Pontevedra police chief, said that the 46-year-old truck driver lost control over his vehicle which was on its way to this city from Hinigaran, Negros Occidental.

The truck driver swerved the vehicle to the left lane and collided head-on with the tricycle driven by Belleza.

Gepilango said the truck dragged the tricycle before crashing into a nipa hut.

The victim was pinned down by the tricycle and died on the spot.

Gepilango said the truck driver might have dozed off but they are checking if the vehicle encountered mechanical trouble that might have caused the accident.

The truck driver will be released from police custody after the 18-hour reglementary detention.

Gepilango said that the familty of the victim and truck driver have yet to meet regarding the accident. 

Meanwhile, two cousins were killed after their motorcycle rammed a steel post in Purok Bougainvillea, Barangay Vista Alegre, Ilog, Negros Occidental on Sunday, September 1.

Police identified the victims as Christian Jan Yap, 20, and his second cousin Jhon Clifford Cines, 23, residents of Barangay Vista Alegre.

Yap hit his head on the steel post and Cines was sprawled on the roadside. They were declared dead in a hospital.
