Documentary on BTS’ RM to have world premiere at 2024 Busan International Film Festival

A documentary film about K-pop group BTS’ leader RM will have its world premiere and first screening at the 29th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) which will run from Oct. 2 to 11 in Busan, South Korea.

“RM: Right People, Wrong Place,” a documentary film directed by Lee Seokjun, “chronicles the eight  months leading up to RM’s military enlistment and the process of creating his second solo album, ‘Right Place, Wrong Person,’ providing an intimate record of deeply personal moments,” according to its official website.

It added, “The documentary follows the journey of RM, the leader of 21st century pop icons BTS, as he explores his true self—both as Kim Namjoon the artist and as an individual.  RM candidly confesses that he sometimes feels like an outsider in conventional settings (‘Right Place, Wrong Person’) and at other times feels out of place in unusual situations (‘Right Person, Wrong Place’).”

“He reflects on how honest he can be as both RM and Kim Namjoon, balancing gratitude for the attention he receives with the pressure and fear that come with his status. RM used the period between the release of his first solo album 'Indigo' and his enlistment to discover his true self, channeling his experiences and emotions into his second solo album. In capturingRM’s creative process for ‘Right Place, Wrong Person,’ the documentary provides profound insight into his authentic journey of introspection,” it added.

According to the BIFF website, “RM: Right People, Wrong Place” will be screened under the Open Cinema section.

The Open Cinema showcases new works that have both artistic quality and popularity, as well as blockbuster works that have garnered international attention. It will be screened at the outdoor theater.

During a press conference for the opening of the BIFF in Seoul on Sept. 3, programmer Kang Sung-won said about RM’s documentary, “I thought it would be an enjoyable experience for the audience in a popular open cinema. I think this is the second time that a documentary has been screened in an open cinema. I wanted to show a variety of films,” Korean media reported.

Kang Sung-won added, "As you know, the main character is currently serving in the military, so he probably won't be coming. Instead, many artists appear in the film, and the director and other artists will be there to say hello.”

This year, the BIFF officially invited 224 films from 63 countries including 99 films for world premiere and international premiere.

A total of 279 films will be screened consisting of the 224 invited films and 55 for Community BIFF.
