Cardinals clip Bombers for share of second

The Cardinals flashed their offensive brilliance as five players scored in twin figures headed by reigning MVP Clint Escamis and Lawrence Mangubat on their way to their fifth victory in seven games.

The victory not only tied Mapua with Letran, but also put them just half a game behind pacesetter College of St. Benilde, who sports a 5-1 card.

Escamis showed the way for Mapua with 19 points built on four treys, while adding four rebounds and two assists, even as Mangubat chipped in 16 points and five boards.

Chris Hubilla also took charge for the Cardinals by firing 15 points, while Marc Cuenco and Jeco Bancale added 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Hubilla and Cuenco immediately stepped on the gas by conspiring for 18 points to give Mapua a commanding 32-18 lead in the opening quarter and led by as many as 23 points, 42-19, heading to halftime.

The Bombers threatened midway through the fourth canto by cutting their double-digit deficit by only seven, 75-68, but the Cardinals held on to their lead with Bancale and Mangubat taking charge until the final buzzer.

Five players also scored in double figures for JRU, but it failed to contain Mapua’s more fiery offense.

Joshua Guiab and Ivan Panapanaan posted 17 and 15 points, Joseph Pangilinan added 12 points, and Marvin Raymundo and Shawn Argente managed 11 points apiece for the Bombers, who slid to 2-5 and joined the San Sebastian Stags and the Arellano Chiefs at the bottom.
