DOH records 126 deaths, over 100K influenza-like illness cases since January 2024
The Department of Health (DOH) announced on Friday, Sept. 27, that the Philippines has logged over 117,372 influenza-like illness (ILI) cases since the beginning of this year.

In a statement, the DOH noted that 117,372 ILI cases were reported from Jan. 1 to Sept. 14. Of this number, there were 126 deaths due to ILI in the same period.
Based on the data gathered, the DOH stated that ILI cases in the country “continue to slow down.”
The total number of ILI cases recorded this year, the DOH said, is 15 percent lower than the 137,980 cases recorded during the same period last year.
The department also noted that the total number of deaths due to ILI reported since the beginning of the year represents an 11 percent reduction in fatalities compared to the 142 deaths during the same period in 2023.
The health department emphasized that “sustained prevention is needed to maintain this downtrend.”
Making flu vaccine available
Despite the slowdown in ILI cases across the country, the DOH assured that it is expediting the procurement of flu vaccines.
“The department reiterates the importance of prevention, including regular handwashing, proper mask-wearing in crowded places, and timely vaccinations,” the DOH said.
“These practices are vital for reducing the risk of infection as flu season continues,” the DOH added.
Early consultation
Moreover, the DOH highlighted the need for early consultation and reporting of cases to prevent potential complications.
“While the nationwide decline in flu-like cases is a positive sign, we must remain proactive. We cannot afford to be complacent,” DOH Secretary Teodoro J. Herbosa said.
Herbosa stressed that prevention, early detection, and vaccination are the “strongest defenses” against this illness.
