Malabon LGU orders removal of piles of garbage at Malabon Central Market

The Malabon City government has coordinated with the management of Malabon Central Market (MCM) for the immediate removal of piles of garbage at the premises.

This is after the city government received complaints from residents and market goers bout foul odor in the area.

“Patuloy po tayo sa ating mga isinisasagawang programa at operasyon upang mapanatiling malinis ang bawat sulok ng Malabon. Sa kabila nito ay ating nabalitaan na ilan sa ating mga mahal na Malabueño ang nagpahayag ng kanilang pangamba dahil sa mga basurang nakatambak sa Malabon Central Market na pinapatakbo ng isang pribadong korporasyon. Kasama na rito ang mga mamimili at mga nagtitinda na nangamba sa kanilang kalusugan at maging sa kanilang trabaho,” City Administrator Dr. Alex Rosete said.

According to the Business Process and Licensing Office (BPLO),  MCM is under the private-public partnership between the local government and the Prestonburg Development Corporation, which means that all the market’s activities, including garbage and market fee collection, are now under the responsibility of the said company. 

The City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) earlier sent a letter to the MCM management reminding them to remove the uncollected wastes within 24-hours upon receipt and ensure that cleanliness in the area will be maintained.

The MCM management has an existing contract with the Metro Waste Solid Waste Management Corporation for the garbage hauling operations (especially bulky wastes). However, there were issues in the waste collection which caused the stockpiling of garbage in the area that should be addressed by the management of the market.

“We’re giving them (MCM management) 24 hours na linisin 'yun, otherwise, siyempre ipapa-check na natin sa ibang offices concerned kung ano 'yung mga measures na dapat gawin diyan kasi naapektuhan na tayo, ang mga residente,” CENRO officer-in-charge Mr. Mark Mesina said.

On Thursday, September 26, the BPLO said that the management of MCM as well as the Langaray People’s Market and Hulong Duhat Market, also operating under the same corporation, started removing uncollected wastes in their areas.

The City government will continue to follow up or check on the status of the garbage collection and cleanliness of the markets and other facilities in the city.
