Aaron Jude Bado’s bronze medal feat at the 2024 World Boxing Cup in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia came at a price on Tuesday, Sept. 25, after suffering an accidental headbutt that rendered him unfit to continue his gold-medal campaign.

Competing in the men’s 51kg quarterfinals against Allesio Camialo of Italy, Bado sustained a bloody gash above the right eye that forced the referee to stop the contest with about a minute left in the first round.
The bout was eventually called off due to the severity of Bado’s injury, with the referee going to the scorecards where the Iligan City standout was ahead in three of the five judges.
The verdict earned Bado the bronze, but was later on advised by the doctors that he was unfit to continue fighting in the coming rounds.
“Sayang po at hindi ko nakuha yung inaaasam ko na makapasok sa finals dahil sa natamo ko na sugat mula sa kalaban,” said Bado.
“Kayang kaya ko yung laban kaso naging masyadong magalaw yung kalaban dahil gustong pumasok, kaya nataymingan ako ma-headbutt sa kilay,” the Cagayan de Oro boxing product added.
Had he been well, Bado could have faced local bet and second seed Battulga Aldarkhishig next.
National team coach Roel Velasco lamented the lost opportunity for Bado, saying that the promising fighter has a strong chance to win the gold medal.
“Pero nagpapasalamat pa rin kami dahil mau maiuuwi tayong bronze medal,” Velasco said.
Bado’s feat came after Tyler Tanap bowed out early in the men’s 71kg after a unanimous 5-0 decision loss to local top seed Byamba-Erdene Otgonbaatar in the opening round.
