Young Filipino math aces have bagged 224 more medals so far this year from various mathematics contests abroad, bringing their 5-year total to 6,538 medals.

This was announced over the weekend by the Mathematics Trainers' Guild Phils. (MTG) which has been mentoring math-gifted students from both public and private schools across the country since 1995.

Between January 2019 and September 2024, MTG-trained students took home 1,234 gold, 1,728 silver and 3,576 bronze medals plus 1,490 merit awards.

Dr. Simon Chua, MTG co-founder and CEO, cited the math wizards for "always giving the competitions their best shot as they keep on making the country and their respective schools and families proud by winning medals."

Among those in the MTG honor roll are the following gold medalists this year: Elaiah Asperon, Xamwell Legaspi and Erwin Aenas Vibal, all from Philippine Science High School Main Campus; Cyris Chad Manarang and Sabrina Louis Cheong, Zamboanga Chong Hua High School; Samuel Alarcon, Puerto Princesa Pilot Elementary School; Heal Job Esio, Pangasinan Universal Institute; Annika Louise Ong and Adrienne Geraldine Co, Immaculate Conception Academy; Elysha Therese Aguilos, Bethany Christian School; Thea Pauleen Garcia, Colegio San Agustin Binan; Robert Henrik Uy, St. John's Institute; Lexander Cole Cua, Hope Christian High School; Hannah Alexis Olaguer, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo National High School; Lara Jane Natividad, Philippine Cultural College; Kyler Rixx Baccay, Academia de Julia Victoria Cavite; and Shiyun Park, Reedley International School.

MTG president Isidro Aguilar referred to the students' remarkable achievements as a "testament to the dedication and drive shown by both the math aces and their trainors."

The Filipino students' feat "also help solidify the Philippines' growing reputation as a math powerhouse," noted MTG secretary Joseph Wee.

Aldwin Sahirul, Robert Degolacion and other MTG officials hope and pray the math wizards would "continue showing their high competence in numbers in the coming tilts."

As of this writing, the math aces were gearing up for contests slated for the last quarter of 2024 -- the two-round Asian Math Olympiad in Japan and the International Math Olympiad for Young Achievers in Singapore.

This year, they competed in contests in Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, South Korea, India, Vietnam, Indonesia and Australia, among others.

MTG has been holding what it calls "12 Saturday math workshops" for students in its 60-plus centers nationwide.

The NGO, which aims to institutionalize math education and training in the country, is celebrating its 29th founding anniversary in October.
