PCG kicks off 2024 National Maritime Week, National Seafarers Day

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) led the nationwide celebration of the 25th National Maritime Week (NMW) and 29th National Seafarers Day (NSD) on Sunday, Sept. 22, at its headquarters in Port Area, Manila.

This year’s NMW carries the theme “Navigating the Future: Safety First” while the NSD has the theme “Marinong Filipino: Ligtas na Paglalayag!”, both of which emphasize the paramount importance of a Filipino seafarer’s safety as they contribute to the Philippines’ development as a maritime nation.

Adm. Ronnie Gil Gavan, PCG commandant, paid tribute to the seafarers for their hard work and dedication to their profession during the opening ceremony.

“As we embark on this journey together, let us remember that safety is not just a priority—it is a culture. It is our duty to instill this culture within our organizations, ensuring that every seafarer returns home safely after each voyage,” Gavan said.

The PCG chief also recognized the contributions of maritime stakeholders in raising the bar for maritime safety standards within the shipping industry.

“This commitment to safety will not only safeguard lives but also inspire the next generation of maritime professionals,” he added.

The celebration started with an ecumenical mass and a wreathe-offering and flower-throwing activities in honor of the slain or missing seafarers and fishermen.

PCG and merchant vessels also blew their horns simultaneously while a dress up of ships – an activity where vessels are decorated – was also held.

The celebration of the NMW and NSD run up until Sept. 29 with the PCG offering various activities to the public.

On Monday, Sept. 23, a staff and salute flag-raising activity will be held at the Rizal Park to honor Filipino mariners and reservists.

A coastal clean-up activity is also scheduled on Sept. 28 while a grand parade will be held on Sept. 29 at the Rajah Sulayman Park in Malate, Manila to San Andres Sports Complex.
