Marbil warns cops vs partisan political activities as PNP beefs up election security

Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil, chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), warned on Sunday, Sept. 22, all policemen to refrain from interfering in politics as police forces across the country have started intensifying the security measures  for the 2025 elections.

The initial phase of election security implementation, according to Marbil, is next month when senatorial candidates file their certificate of candidacy.

“We are entering a crucial period as candidates for the 2025 elections begin filing their certificates of candidacy. I am directing all local police units to remain vigilant, perform their duties efficiently under the Quad principle, and ensure public safety,” said Marbil.

“At the same time, I am reminding every officer that political neutrality is a core responsibility. Do not allow yourselves to be influenced or used by politicians,” he added.

Marbil explained that police officers must reaffirm the PNP’s  commitment to maintaining peace and order during the election period.

He added that the police role in the elections must be limited to upholding law and order and emphasized the need to adhere to the PNP’s core function: intelligence, investigation, operations, and community relations.

Marbil warned that any officer found engaging in partisan activities or compromising the integrity of the police force will be dealt with accordingly. 

“The PNP is tasked with protecting the democratic process, not participating in it. We will not tolerate any officer who compromises our commitment to neutrality and fairness. Any form of political interference, whether directly or indirectly, will be met with swift and decisive action,” said Marbil.

“It is our duty to ensure that the election process remains peaceful, orderly, and secure. Every police officer must remember their oath to serve the people, not politicians,” he pointed out.

Marbil also encouraged the public to cooperate with the PNP during the election period and to report any irregularities involving law enforcement personnel.

“Our goal is to deliver a safe and credible election. With the cooperation of the public and the dedication of our police force, we will succeed in ensuring that the 2025 elections are fair and peaceful,” he added.
