'Habagat', 4 storms kill 25 – NDRRMC

One more person died due to the combined effects of tropical cyclones “Ferdie”, “Gener”, “Helen” and “Igme” as well as the enhanced southwest monsoon or “habagat”, bring the death toll to 25.

A situational report from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Saturday, Sept. 21, showed that the new fatality was logged in Mimaropa (Region 4B). The total deaths in the region rose to 10.

Previously, the NDRRMC said there were also five deaths in Western Visayas (Region 6), four each in Zamboanga Peninsula (Region 9) and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), and two in Central Visayas (Region 7).

The number of missing individuals went down to eight from 14; while 13 others were injured.

The reported casualties are subject to validation, the disaster agency said.

Mimaropa was among the hardest-hit regions by the habagat and the four tropical cyclones, which have been affecting the country since Sept. 11.

The NDRRMC said 387,755 families comprised of 1,449,333 individuals were affected by the five weather disturbances in Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Cagayan Valley (Region 2), Central Luzon (Region 3), 4A, Bicol (Region 5), 6, 7, 9, Northern Mindanao (Region 10), Davao Region (Region 11), Soccsksargen (Region 12), Caraga (Region 13), and BARMM.

More than 83,000 individuals remained in evacuation centers nationwide.

The damage to agriculture was estimated to have reached P 600,831,660.43 which affected 11,170 farmers and fisherfolk in Mimaropa, Regions 6 and 9.

Infrastructure loss, on the other hand, was pegged at P22,571,500 with 48 infrastructure projects damaged or destroyed in Mimaropa, Regions 6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, and CAR.

Tropical Depression Igme exited the country's area of responsibility before dawn Saturday. Meanwhile, Ferdie left on Sept. 14, while Gener and Helen departed on Sept. 18.

However, many parts of mainland Luzon as well as portions of Visayas and Mindanao were still experiencing rainfall due to the enhanced habagat.
