In a landmark initiative to enhance local tourism, Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco recently led the groundbreaking ceremony for a new Tourist Rest Area (TRA) in Patikul, Sulu.

Frasco said the project is part of the Marcos administration's broader strategy to create economic opportunities nationwide.

“Under the vision of a Bagong Pilipinas, no one will be left behind in the development of our country,” she said.

Strategically located near the Provincial Capitol, the TRA will offer essential amenities, including restrooms, information desks, and a pasalubong center to promote local handicrafts and products, the DOT said.

Frasco noted Sulu’s unique cultural offerings, such as its rich traditions and exceptional craftsmanship, particularly the renowned Pis Siyabit weaving.

“These are what make Sulu an exceptional destination for both local and international tourists,” she remarked.

Partnership agreement for development

Following the groundbreaking, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed between the DOT, the provincial government of Sulu, and the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA).

The agreement was executed by Frasco, TIEZA Assistant Chief Operating Officer Jetro Lozada, and local government representatives, including Governor Abdusakur Tan and Patikul Municipality Mayor Kabir Hayudini.

This collaboration aims to ensure the efficient construction and management of the TRA.

“This tourist rest area brings revenue and opens opportunities for economic growth and cultural exchange,” Frasco stated.

In addition to standard facilities, the TRA will feature a Musalla to cater to the spiritual needs of visitors and will incorporate eco-friendly elements such as solar panels and a rainwater catchment system.

Tan underscored the initiative's importance in promoting Sulu’s cultural heritage while stimulating economic growth.

“The development of this infrastructure is essential for our tourism potential,” he said.

Cultural showcase at Bangsa Sug Day

The day prior to the groundbreaking, Frasco attended the 643rd Bangsa Sug Day Anniversary in Maimbung, where she honored local artisans during the Pis Siyabit fashion show.

The event celebrated the rich heritage of the Tausug people and underscored the DOT’s commitment to expanding Halal tourism as a vital sector.

“The Philippines is becoming increasingly recognized as a Muslim-friendly destination,” she noted, referencing the growing number of Halal-certified dining options available.

The Pis Siyabit fashion show highlighted various designs from local municipalities, showcasing the region’s textile traditions and complemented by performances that celebrated Tausug culture.

Future prospects for Sulu

Deputy Speaker Duke Frasco, a strong advocate for the initiative, stressed the vital role of tourism in job creation and regional development.

“With national and local governments working together to achieve our aspirations for our nation, we can be assured that this proud and historic province of Sulu will see its brightest days yet,” he asserted.

As Sulu prepares to unveil its new TRA, the DOT said that the project signifies not only infrastructure development but also a celebration of the province's cultural identity on national and global platforms.

Accoding to the DOT, the TRA in Sulu will be the fifth in Mindanao and the fifteenth nationwide, marking a “significant advancement in the Philippines' tourism infrastructure.”
