NDRRMC: Death toll due to habagat, 3 storms rises to 24; 1.3M people affected

The number of people who died due to the combined effects of storms “Helen”, “Gener” and “Ferdie” and the enhanced “habagat” or southwest monsoon further increased to 24.

In a situational report by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Friday, Sept. 20, it said that nine people died in Mimaropa (Region 4B), five in Western Visayas (Region 6), four each in Zamboanga Peninsula (Region 9) and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), and two in Central Visayas (Region 7).

The disaster agency also reported that 14 people were missing, 12 in Region 4B and two in Region 9; while 13 others were reported injured.

A state of calamity was declared in San Enrique, Negros Occidental and Pandan, Antique due to the extent of damage these areas sustained from the enhanced habagat. Ferdie, Gener, and Helen since Sept. 11.

Habagat and the three storms have affected 356,578 families comprised of 1,303,677 individuals in Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Cagayan Valley (Region 2), Central Luzon (Region 3), 4A, Bicol (Region 5), 6, 7, 9, Northern Mindanao (Region 10), Davao Region (Region 11), Soccsksargen (Region 12), Caraga (Region 13), and BARMM,

Of those affected, around 94,000 people were displaced and either living temporarily in evacuation centers or at their friends’ or relatives’ houses.

As of writing, there were 36 road sections and five bridges that were still not passable to the public due to flooding and landslides in Region 2, 4A, 4B, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and BARMM.

Meanwhile, 12 barangays were affected by power interruption in Regions 6 and 9.

A total of 332 homes were also totally destroyed, leaving families homeless, while 1,822 houses were partially damaged.

Damage to infrastructure was initially pegged at P22.57 million as 43 infrastructure projects sustained damage while agricultural loss is still being assessed.

The national government has extended P39 million worth of assistance to 41,836 families out of 119,437 families needing help from eight regions.
