Para swimmer Ernie Gawilan couldn’t ride the momentum of his superb showing in heats after falling short in the men’s 400m Freestyle-S7 finals of the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games at Paris La Defense Arena late Monday, Sept. 2.
Gawilan, 33, clocked in 5 minutes and 3.18 seconds – slower than his preliminaries time of 5:00.03 – to wind up sixth place in the medal round.
Before barging into the finals, the pride of Davao City was the third fastest swimmer just behind USA’s Evan Austin and Neutral Paralympiam Aleksei Ganiuk.
Austin (4:48.91) and Ganiuk (4:57.66) stumbled as well and ended up notching fourth and fifth spots in the finals.
Closing out as fourth overall in Heat 1, Italy’s Federico Bicelli (4:38.70) emerged on top and copped the gold medal while Ukraine’s Andrii Trusov (4:40.17) and Argentina’s Inaki Basiloff (4:40.27) took the silver and bronze honors, respectively.
Gawilan also competed in the men’s 200m IM-SM7 where he didn’t reach the finals after finishing last in the heats.
Gawilan, a three-time Paralympian, joins para taekwondo jin Allain Ganapin and para archer Agustina Bantiloc to the exit door of the French capital.
Medal remains elusive for the Filipino Paralympians in the quadrennial meet after the country won a bronze medal in 2016 Rio courtesy of Josephine Medina in the table tennis singles class 8 event.
Medina’s triumph was the second mint for the Philippines, with para powerlifter Adeline Dumapong bagging a bronze in the women’s -82.5kg class of the 2000 Sydney Games.
Still in contention for the Philippines are para wheelchair racer Jerrold Mangliwan, para swimmer Angel Otom and para javelin thrower Cendy Asusano.
Mangwilan will have another shot in round 1 of the men’s 100m-T52 set Friday, Sept. 6, while Otom competes in women’s 50m butterfly-S5 on the same day also in women's 50m back Tuesday, Sept. 3.
Asusano plays in the women’s javelin throw-F54 Saturday, Sept. 7.
