La Mesa Dam nears spilling level

The water level at La Mesa Dam in Quezon City rose to 80.02 meters at 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 2, just 0.13 meters short of the dam’s spilling level of 80.15 meters.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said La Mesa Dam’s water level is “expected to rise due to moderate to heavy rains caused by Tropical Storm Enteng.”

In less than six hours, the water level climbed by half a meter, from 79.51 meters at 8 a.m. to its current level of 80.02 meters.

Since La Mesa Dam does not have a gate to control the accumulation of floodwaters, PAGASA warned that once the dam elevation reaches 80.15 meters, excess water will just overflow.

Water discharged from La Mesa Dam may affect low-lying areas along the Tullahan River in Quezon City, particularly Fairview, Forest Hills Subdivision, Quirino Highway, Sta. Quiteria, and San Bartolome.

It may also affect areas in Valenzuela, specifically North Expressway and La Huerta Subdivision, as well as parts of Malabon.

“All residents living in the aforementioned areas, especially those near the river banks, are advised to be alert for possible flooding,” PAGASA said.
