Treñas issued three separate and contradicting statements since Sunday night until he came up with an announcement cancelling classes on all levels before 11 a.m. on Monday.
He first issued a statement on Sunday night, September 1.
Treñas had earlier assured he will announce the suspension of classes early after he faced backlash on August 27 for abruptly ordering cancellation of classes when students were already in school due to bad weather.
He then doubled down on his claim that there will be no cancellation of classes in a press conference on Monday, September 1.
“We recommend the suspension of face-to-face classes this afternoon in all levels in both public and private educational institutions,” Treñas announced on his official Facebook page less than two hours after the press conference.
The abrupt announcement led to students scrambling to find rides, especially those who commute.
Some parents of young students had to get out of their jobs just to pick up their children.
Others took to social media to criticize the flip-flopping statements that put the safety of children at risk.
“Kon ga consider kamo safety, tani kagab-i pa! Halin pa kagab-i hulat namon nga mga parents kay kita ta man sa forecast nga maulan gid today! Second time na ni! (If you consider safety, it should have been last night because parents like me were waiting as we know that the forecast is rainy. This happened for the second time),” said Khen Urbina Gulmatico.
