CAVITE – A carrier barge drifted and crashed against the pier in Barangay Wawa II, Rosario, amid the inclement weather brought by the southwest monsoon intensified by tropical storm Enteng on Monday, Sept. 2.

Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO) responder Romeo Jonje told the Manila Bulletin that the barge hit a bridge along the pier used to unload cargo from waterway vessels.

Fortunately, no fishing boats or other structures in the area have been affected.

“Kanina po, hinihila kaya lang baka magkaroon daw ng oil spill kaya itinigil na. Ang dagat naman po ay low tide na ngayon. Kinargahan na rin nila ng tubig kanina… para hindi na humampas, mas mabigat na (Earlier, they were trying to tow it, but they had to stop due to concerns about a possible oil spill. The sea is currently at low tide. And they added water to the barge earlier to make it heavier so it would not keep crashing against the pier),” Jonje said.

Cavite 1st District Rep. Jolo Revilla said they are already coordinating with the Philippine Coast Guard and the Philippine National Police to ensure the safety of residents near the coast.

“Nag-abiso na rin ang mga awtoridad na ilikas na muna ang mga maliliit na bangka at ang mga residenteng nakatira malapit sa pinangyarihan ng insidente sa Brgy. Wawa II evacuation center (Authorities have also advised evacuating small boats and residents living near the incident site to the Brgy. Wawa II evacuation center),” Revilla said in a Facebook post.
