What's holding up the promised salary increase for public school teachers? ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. France Castro wants to know.
"Bakit may EO na, may IRR na, pero di pa binibigay ang salary increase? Ganun pa rin ang payslip ng mga teachers," Castro, a House Minority leader, said in a statement on Monday, Sept. 1.
(There's already an Executive Order and Implementing Rules and Regulations, but they haven't given the salary increase yet. The payslip of teachers remain the same.)
"Our teachers and government employees have long waited for a substantial adjustment of their salaries, which is crucial to cope with the rising cost of living due to inflation," noted the Makabayan congresswoman.
Castro said the salary hike is outlined in Executive Order (EO) No. 64 signed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Aug. 2, 2023.
She said the salary adjustment, which was supposed to retroactively take effect from Jan. 1, 2024, remains pending for certain employees.
"Ang problema kakarampot na nga tapos delayed pa. Nananatili ang panawagan ng mga guro na P50k entry level at substanyal na dagdag na sahod," she added.
(The problem here is that the increase is slight, and yet it's delayed. The teachers' plea for P50,000 entry level pay and substantial pay hike remain.)
Castro urged the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) and relevant agencies to expedite the release of guidelines for the implementation of the salary increases, along with the yearly medical allowance of P7,000 for government employees.
"The funds have been allocated, and the commitment has been made in the SONA (State of the Nation Address). It is time to translate these promises into reality for our hardworking civil servants," she remarked.
