Pageantry today isn’t just about beauty. As beauty contests evolve, they are becoming platforms that amplify women’s voices and a way to champion heritage. A perfect example of this is Ahtisa Manalo’s journey in Miss Cosmo 2024.
For her national costume at the international pageant, the Filipino beauty queen dons an enchanting look that pays homage to one of the most recognizable characters in local comics and cinema—Dyesebel.
Created by Mars Ravelo and illustrated by Elpidio Torres, Dyesebel first appeared in Pilipino Komiks #1 in 1952. Since then, the mermaid’s tale has been adapted into six films and two TV shows, cementing its status as a Filipino pop culture icon.
To capture Dyesebel’s allure in a wearable piece, Ahtisa worked with Filipino designer Ehrran Montoya. The result is a spellbinding orange ensemble, featuring embellishments that mimic scales and flowing design elements, evoking the beauty and grace of the mythical sea creature.
“More than just a symbol of myth and beauty, Dyesebel represents the power of storytelling in shaping our identity and connecting generations,” Ahtisa posted. “Pop culture encapsulates the spirit of our shared heritage, blending tradition with contemporary artistry. It deserves to be celebrated for its unique ability to unite people, inspire creativity, and keep our cultural legends alive in the modern world.”
