CHR probes killing of Cavite barangay chairman

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has started its probe on the killing last Aug. 31 of Rodrigo Tanagas, barangay (village) chairman of Tulay-A, in Maragondon, Cavite.

Tanagas was gunned down by a riding-in-tandem while he was helping health workers cut grass in their barangay. The motive behind the attack remains unknown, and the suspects are still unidentified.

In a statement, the CHR acknowledged the swift response of the police to promptly resolve the killing of Tanagas.

With so many attacks committed against barangay officials lately, the CHR reminded the government of its duty to protect its constituents and provide Filipino voters with the opportunity to exercise political will without fear.

"Proactive and preventive measures must be implemented to directly address the persisting occurrence of violence on the ground," it said.

"As the 2025 midterm election nears, it is incumbent upon the State to ensure a secure environment where elected officials can serve their constituents without fear. Likewise, it is essential that voters are afforded the confidence and safety needed to engage in the electoral process," it pointed out.
