‘Habagat’ damages 29 houses in Bacolod


BACOLOD CITY – Twenty-nine houses were damaged by heavy rain and strong wind from the “habagat” or southwest monsoon here.

The Department of Social Services and Development (DSSD) said six houses were totally and 23 were partially damaged. 

Barangay Singcang-Airport has 11, followed by Barangay Pahanocoy with four, and one each in Barangays Vista Alegre, Mansilingan, Alijis, Granada, Handumanan, Punta Taytay, Estefania, and Taculing.

However, this is still subject for validation, according to the DSSD. 

As of 6:30 p.m. Monday, September 16, the DSSD said that 399 families or 1,371 individuals were displaced in nine barangays here due to flooding. 

The DSSD said 395 families or 1,355 persons have returned home while four families or 16 individuals are still inside evacuation centers.

Evacuees were from Barangays Alijis, Handumanan, Sum-ag, Pahanocoy, Cabug, Taculing, Singcang-Airport, Punta Taytay, and Mansilingan. 

Class suspension

Mayor Albee Benitez has extended the suspension of face-to-face classes from pre-school to senior high school in public and private schools here on September 17 and 18 due to inclement weather. 

Benitez issued an executive order on Tuesday, September 17 stating that private and public schools are permitted to conduct alternative modes of learning such as asynchronous classes. 

Cancellation of classes on the college level will be at the discretion of administrators.

Drowning

The body of a 69-year-old man who drowned on Saturday, September 14, was found in Barangay Bulwangan, Hinoba-an, Negros Occidental on Monday, September 16.

Police said the victim was on his way home from a drinking session with friends when he was carried away by flashflood while crossing a river.
