Clint Escamis exploded with a career-high 28 points as Mapua edged a gritty University of Perpetual Help side, 71-65, in NCAA Season 100 men’s basketball at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City on Sunday, Sept. 15.

The reigning Most Valuable Player steered the Cardinals particularly in the crunch, where he drained crucial three-pointers that allowed them to grab the upperhand and pull away for the win.
It was Mapua’s second win in three outings, forging a four-way logjam at second along with Perpetual, San Sebastian and San Beda.
Trailing 60-54 halfway through the final period, Escamis sparkled a 13-2 blast highlighted by two triples to give the Cardinals the crucial 67-62 edge with 1:23 left.
Mark Gojo Cruz tried to stop the bleeding by answering with his own three-pointer for Perpetual, but Mapua banked on its big men this time, grabbing two defensive rebounds in the last minute that virtually doused the fire out of the Altas.
Marc Cuenco finished with 12 points and six rebounds for the Cardinals, who trailed for most parts of the game.
Three players, meanwhile, scored in double figures for the Altas with Cruz finishing with 17 points, and Christian Pagaran and Cedrick Abis adding 12 points apiece.
