8,671 evacuate in Antique due to ‘habagat’


ILOILO CITY – Around 8,671 individuals from 2,641 families evacuated from their homes in Antique province as of Sunday, September 15, due to the impact of the ‘habagat’ or the southwest monsoon.

The Antique Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said heavy rainfall since Thursday  left certain areas flooded and damaged homes in coastal communities in the province.

Several infrastructures, including seawall and light bridges, have been damaged.

The Sebaste Municipal DRRMO reported that a portion of the public cemetery collapsed and a cadaver was found near the shoreline.

The Antique Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office under chief Larry Petinglay has been delivering food packs for evacuees amid continuing rainfall.

The State weather bureau has put the towns of Tobias Fornier, Anini-Y, Hamtic, Sibalom, Belison, Patnongon, and the capital of San Jose de Buenavista under orange rainfall alert. As a result, local government units (LGUs) suspended classes on Monday, September 16.
