4 dead, 3 hurt as fallen tree hits tricycle in Lanao del Sur on Friday the 13th


Four children died and three persons were injured when the tricycle they were riding was crushed by a tree uprooted by bad weather in Barangay Cabasaran, Malabang, Lanao del Sur on Friday, September 13.

The fatalities were aged seven to 15-years-old, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Ministry of Social Services and Development (MSSD) said.

Injured were the 18-year-old tricycle driver and two passengers, one aged nine.

Lanao del Sur B Provincial Social Welfare Officer Hadja Linang Pangkat said they have visited and extended assistance to the victims' families and the injured.

The survivors were assessed for their needs and provision of essential support, said Pangkat, who added that burial assistance for the deceased and financial support for those recovering will be provided.

The MSSD distributed welfare goods to the families of all the victims, composed of 25 kilograms of rice, assorted canned goods, and instant coffee.

Pangkat said they continue to monitor the affected families to ensure that they will have additional social services or interventions.

The injured were taken to the Dr. Serapio Hospital in Malabang.

The victims were on their way to a madrasah or Islamic school when the incident happened. 

The area has been experiencing inclement weather due to the  southwest monsoon or “habagat.”
