False sense of security: DOH warns public against 'illegal' mpox vaccines

The Department of Health (DOH) on Friday, Sept. 13, issued a warning against mpox vaccines that are reportedly available in the country.

In a public health advisory, the DOH stated that it has come to its attention that some organizations or individuals may be offering mpox vaccines “imported” from abroad.

“The public is cautioned against availing themselves of such vaccines,” the DOH said.

These purported mpox vaccines, the department said, have been “brought into the country without the careful oversight of regulatory agencies” like the DOH and its Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The DOH explained that mpox vaccines “require specific storage and handling conditions,” particularly a cold chain.

“Without DOH and FDA safeguards, there is no way to ensure safety and efficacy,” the department said.

Meanwhile, the DOH advised the public to wait for mpox vaccine doses to become “legally available” in the Philippines.

This, the DOH said, will help ensure that “you are getting real, safe, and effective vaccines—not just a false sense of security.”
