Two accessible and stylish new SUVs

The Astara group offers quite a broad selection of vehicles under its roster with brands like GAC, Peugeot, JAC, and JMC. Many are already familiar with what GAC and Peugeot offer, and so to introduce the intriguing line up of the JAC brand, we were invited to test drive their latest additions.

JAC’s new models are the JS6 and JS8 Pro SUVs. Both vehicles are positioned to meet the diverse needs of Filipino motorists and were showcased during a quick media drive to Pampanga for lunch.

A bold first impression

Both the JAC JS6 and JS8 Pro make a strong visual statement. The JS6 has a sleek crossover design that features wraparound daytime running lamps, low-set headlamps, and a pronounced belt line. It embodies JAC's latest design direction, with angular lines that make it stand out as a modern compact SUV. On the other hand, the JS8 Pro maintains the appeal with its older "inverted 7" styling of the front lamps. Both SUVs are sizable and have a presence that matches their respective classes. The JS6 comfortably accommodates five passengers, while the JS8 Pro offers a third row for seven occupants (five adults and two children).

Power and comfort

Both the JS6 and JS8 Pro are equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine that generates 182-Ps and 300-Nm of torque. However, their driving dynamics differ due to variations in gear ratios, weight, and overall platform polish.

The JS6, built on a new platform, feels solid and delivers a balanced and responsive driving experience. It handles city traffic with ease and offers a smooth ride, making it comfortable for daily commutes.

The JS8 Pro provides similar power and performance but needs a bit of catch-up in the noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) department. It’s not as bad as it sounds though, and is just indicative of the category that the vehicle competes in.

Practical amenities

Inside both SUVs, comfort and practicality take precedence. Features such as leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, and electrically adjustable seats contribute to a pleasant driving environment. The only minor inconvenience I found was the steering wheel angle. Despite the tiller’s four-way adjustability, the wheel may still feel slightly off, with the top seemingly a bit too far and the bottom too close. Those with longer arms should feel more at ease I reckon.

Both the JS6 and JS8 Pro offer ample legroom and headroom, making them suitable for long drives and family outings. The interior materials are of good quality, adding a touch of luxury to the overall experience. Rear passengers especially will appreciate the smooth ride quality, even on less-than-ideal road surfaces.

Technology and features

The technology package in these SUVs strikes the right balance between functionality and simplicity. Instead of overwhelming the driver, the dual 12.3-inch displays provide clear and accessible information. The infotainment system is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and offers user-friendly connectivity with the use of a cable. The inclusion of a 360-degree camera and advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) features like lane departure warning, and blind spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control enhances safety without compromising the driving experience.

Overall experience

During the short few hours that we drove the vehicles, both the JS6 and JS8 Pro shone in terms of driving dynamics. Their adaptive cruise control systems operate smoothly and confidently, offering a better experience than from other vehicles in a similar price range. It was a stress-free driving experience on the highways and performed well in and out of city traffic.

A promising value proposition

Priced at ₱1.380 million for the JS6 and ₱1.350 million for the JS8 Pro, these SUVs provide an enticing package for Filipino consumers. They come with a five-year or 150,000 kilometer warranty, as well as a 24/7 Emergency Roadside Assistance service for the first year.

A more in-depth test drive will paint a better picture of what these vehicles are fully capable of, but overall, both the JAC JS6 and JS8 Pro offer a value-for-money proposition that deserves attention.
