PH, China hold high-level talks on SCS issue

The Philippines and China have held high level talks on the South China Sea issue as tension also started escalating in the waters off Escoda Shoal.

Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Undersecretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Chen Xiaodong on Wednesday, Sept. 11, had a frank and candid exchange of views in Beijing as they met for the Bilateral Consultation Mechanism (BCM) regarding the sea row.

Lazaro emphasized that the Escoda Shoal, where there were recent reports of aggression of China against the Philippines such as ramming and water cannon attacks, is well within the Philippines exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

She also reaffirmed the consistent position of the Philippines and explored ways to lower the tension in the area, according to DFA.

Meanwhile, according to the Chinese Embassy in Manila, Chen maintained that the Escoda Shoal (known in China as Xianbin Jiao) belongs to Beijing and urged "the Philippine side to immediately withdraw relevant vessels" from there.

Lazaro and Chen agreed to continue discussions to maintain peace and stability in the region despite continuing row at sea.

That could be done through hotline mechanisms, coast guard cooperation, and marine scientific and technological cooperation.

Both sides also agreed that BCM is a forum for promoting maritime dialogue and enhancing bilateral cooperation while agreeing to continue engagement through diplomatic channels.

The last BCM, which led to a common Understanding on the Management of the Situation on the Ayungin Shoal, was held in Manila in July 2024.
