CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro – Police arrested a 29-year-old man for allegedly engaging in illegal online sabong or cockfightng on Saturday night, September 7, in Gloria town, this province.
The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG)-Oriental Mindoro Provincial Field Unit identified the suspect as John Alfred Apilado, alias Jaja, a resident of Barangay Maligaya, Gloria.
Police said the suspect was engaged in online sabong when he was arrested at about 9 p.m. inside a betting station with a billiards table owned by municipal councilor Owel Janda.
Two individuals, a bettor and financier and both residents of Barangay Maligaya, fled.
Janda denied any involvement in the illegal activity but admitted that the establishment where the suspect was arrested is owned by their family.
Seized from the establishment were bet money, a computer, and betting paraphernalia.
Apilado faces a case for violation of Presidential Decree No. 1602 in relation to Republic Act 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act.
