2,000 hogs die from ASF in Zamboanga City

ZAMBOANGA CITY - The Office of the City Veterinarian has reported more than 2,000 hog mortalities here due to an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF).

In a press conference at the Zamboanga City Hall on Wednesday, September 11, Dr. Arcadio Cavan, city veterinarian, reported 2,232 hog mortalities and 601 affected hog raisers as of September 6, an increase in the number of cases since last month amid efforts to arrest its rise.

Cavan said a total of 38 barangays were affected by the disease, nine in the west coast and 29 in the east. Most of the affected barangays have reported cases of ASF in the past.

Veterinary field offices have strengthened biosecurity measures in affected barangays to contain and prevent the spread of the virus.

The office also distributes disinfectants to hog raisers regularly.

“We are in partnership with the city police in manning the border checkpoints in the east and west boundaries of the city to inspect all shipments of pork that are coming into the city 24/7," Cavan added.
