New Washington, Aklan learns Makati's best practices on gender equality, green reforms


Officials of New Washington, Aklan visited Makati City on a benchmarking mission aimed at learning the city's best practices on gender equality and women's empowerment, as well as its solid waste management initiatives.

Present during the event were New Washington officials Pitchie Joy Alfaro, Fimmy Enar, Denes Casugbu, Marichu Dantes, Russel Sarabia, Leda Regalado, and other representatives.

On the other hand, Makati City officials who welcomed them included International Relations Department official Ichi Yabut, Department of Environmental Services head Engr. Augusto Delos Santos, Technical Working Group of the Makati Gender and Development Council head Olivia Caray, Planning Officer of the Planning Technical Services Division of the Department of Environmental Services Joed Magtibay, and Section Head of the Plastic Monitoring Taskforce Edgar Pamplina.

Being a staunch promoter of gender equality and women empowerment, Makati City Mayor Abby Binay spearheaded various programs of the city aimed at ensuring the protection of women and children against discrimination and violence.

She also instituted reforms protecting all genders in the city including the LGBTQIA+ community.

Her administration also prioritizes the creation of programs boosting awareness on environmental protection and sustainability which include stricter waste management protocols, expansion of green spaces, and improving the air quality of the city.

Proactive programs and initiatives aimed at mitigating the city's carbon emissions and adapt to the latest technology in its climate change efforts were also launched in the city such as the deployment of smart and sustainable mass transportation, the use of government electric vehicles, installation of solar panels in all government buildings and schools, and other systems detecting the adverse effects of climate change in Makati.

Makati also won multiple awards for its green achievements.
