Makati City Rep. Luis Campos led the vaccination drive together with Vice Mayor Monique Lagdameo and other city government officials and executives.
Shingles is a viral infection triggered by the varicella-zoster virus, the same one that causes chickenpox.
Though not life-threatening, shingles can cause severe pain and discomfort. The symptoms of shingles often include pain, burning, tingling, and a red rash that develops into itchy, fluid-filled blisters.
"Our shingles vaccination drive is an important step in our continuous effort to ensure the health and safety of all Makatizens. By protecting the most vulnerable residents against shingles, we are working towards a healthier, better protected, and more resilient community,” Mayor Abby Binay said Friday, August 9, adding that Makati is the only local government unit (LGU) in the country that provides free shingles vaccine.
She also tasked the Makati Health Department (MHD) vaccination teams to conduct house-to-house visits to various barangays to administer the first dose of the vaccine.
Nearly 12,000 residents pre-registered to receive the Shingrix vaccine as early as January this year.
The vaccine, which requires two doses, is intended for immunocompromised adults aged 19 and above and senior residents aged 50 to 80.
"To prepare the community for the rollout of the vaccination, the MHD conducted community lectures and pre-registration efforts in all barangays. Mayor Abby said Makati health workers provided residents with vital information about shingles and its prevention," the city government said.
"We encourage all eligible residents to take advantage of this free vaccination service to protect themselves from the severe effects of shingles," Binay stressed.
Each dose of the Shingrix vaccine costs between P8,000 and P10,000. However, it is being given free to Makati Yellow Card holders. The second dose of the vaccine will be administered after one month to immunocompromised residents, while seniors will receive their second dose after two months.
Binay reminded residents who are experiencing the symptoms of shingles or suspect that they may be infected, to visit the nearest health center for check-up. Yellow Card holders may also consult at the Ospital ng Makati or Makati Life Medical Center for free.
