The Bureau of Fire Protection-National Capital Region (BFP-NCR) has inspected for compliance with the Fire Code of the Philippines or Presidential Decree No. 1185 over 228,000 buildings and commercial establishments out of 358,772 businesses in Metro Manila.
BFP-NCR Regional Director Chief Supt. Nahum Tarroza had advised business owners to comply with the provisions of PD No. 1185 and not to schedule fire safety inspections of their establishment then fail to be present for it.

During a media interface at the BFP National headquarters in Quezon City, on Wednesday, August 7, Tarroza cited a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) or Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) establishment for allegedly failing to comply with building permit requirements, including fire inspections.
“Pupuntahan ang building, iinspect, kapag pasado, release, kapag hindi, ipapasara (The building will be inspected on the spot. If it passes, a certificate will be issued; if not, it will be closed down),” he added.
He emphasized that business owners, including those with commercial units or landlords, must obtain a mayor's permit that covers sanitation, electrical, and fire permits to qualify for a BFP inspection.
Fire inspections aim to prevent fires and ensure the safety of people.
Meanwhile, a BFP-NCR comparative fire data for January to July 2023 and January to July 2024 showed a 13.17 percent increase in fire incidents in Metro Manila.
A total of 1,127 fire incidents have been recorded in Metro Manila from January to July this year.
It also emphasized the importance of heightened fire safety measures and awareness to address this alarming increase.
