I frequently dance at home in my spare time, but not in public. I may not be the best dancer, but I can keep up with the music. So, when dancing became part of the entertainment section, I was thrilled. This involves covering dance events and even interviewing dance instructors and enthusiasts.
On July 28, I had the fantastic experience of attending the G-Force Dance Project 2024 at The Theater Solaire in Parañaque City. It felt like a graduation ceremony, celebrating the completion of a dance crash course catering to individuals of all ages. The venue was filled with vibrant energy as students from all over showcased their talent and passion for dance.
After the dance concert, I met backstage the energetic Georcelle Dapat-Sy, the artistic director for G-Force, the country’s popular dance group. After captivating audiences with two sold-out recitals on July 7 and 28, Georcelle revealed that G-Force is set to embark on an exciting tour in Canada and the Middle East, a significant step in their global expansion.
“We’ve been touring the Philippines. This August, G-Force will go to Canada. What’s great about this tour is the Filipino touch. Whenever Filipinos see G-Force, they feel like they’re home,” Teacher Georcelle said. “There’s so many things I want to do. So, we had a one-month brainstorming meeting. And we are going global. We will be in the Middle East in November.”
Georcelle mentioned that G-Force will soon introduce the captivating art of swing dance to the newest generation of dance enthusiasts.
“The Gen Z dancers have already swung on stage. This is us introducing the movements from before. Why don’t we teach them and give them a new interpretation? I recently reconnected with my first mentor, Eric Edralin. I started in this business at an early age,” she said.
The dance concert was remarkable, but what astonished me was witnessing a 70-year-old doctor gracefully performing hip-hop dance moves.
Dr. Kim Eslava, a former pediatrician at Ospital ng Maynila, almost stole the show with her dance moves. Cheers erupted as soon as she appeared on stage with the performers for the adult hip-hop segment of the program. Indeed, age is just a number.
When G-Force began 19 years ago, the letter G in G-Force only meant Georcelle. However, it has since evolved with different meanings for the letter G in G-Force.
“G was for Georcelle when we started. But now, it’s a global force. And now, with Gen Zs, it has become an operational force. Throughout the years, the meaning of the letter G has changed.”
Georcelle enthusiastically motivated everyone to participate in dancing, emphasizing its numerous benefits.
“That’s why I love TikTok; it's not intimidating. It's so inviting. My advice is not to be intimidated. Through TikTok, many have embraced dance. There’s dancing for all, and there’s also a dance studio where you can learn how to dance. So, if your goal in dancing is to lose weight, then dance. If your goal is to be happy, then dance. If you want to become a professional dancer, do it seriously. Dancing is very beneficial. You will be happy, and it is very healthy because you will move. And you will meet a lot of friends,” Georcelle said.
Dancing offers several benefits, including improved heart and lung health, increased muscular strength, endurance, and motor fitness, enhanced aerobic fitness, improved muscle tone and strength, better weight management, stronger bones, reduced risk of osteoporosis, and improved coordination, agility, and flexibility.
So what are you waiting for? Get ready to put on your dancing shoes and hit the dance floor!
