PH urges Bangladesh peaceful, orderly transition

The Philippine government is calling for a “peaceful and orderly” transition of power in Bangladesh after the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Tuesday, Aug. 6.

“The Philippine government is closely monitoring the developing situation in Bangladesh,” it said in a statement.

“The Philippines calls for the peaceful and orderly transition of power in the People's Republic of Bangladesh, following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 05 August 2024.”

On Monday, Aug. 5, the Prime Minister resigned and fled to neighboring India after protesters stormed her official residence.

This came after weeks of deadly anti-government demonstrations in the country.

Protesters celebrated on the streets the end of the former prime minister’s 15-year reign as the military announced they would form an interim government.

“The Philippines conveys its solidarity with the people of Bangladesh and commits to efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in Bangladesh.

The DFA earlier raised Alert Level 1 in Bangladesh following the recommendation of the Philippine Embassy in Dhaka.

“Alert Level 1 reminds all Filipinos in the country to remain indoors and to regularly monitor the situation during this period of transition,” the statement read.

“The Philippine Embassy in Dhaka and the entire government stand ready to assist Filipinos affected by the on-going political developments in the country,” it added.
