Occasional rains may persist in parts of Luzon, Visayas due to 'habagat'

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) continues to monitor a low pressure area (LPA) and a tropical depression near the country, but the southwest monsoon will remain the dominant weather system, potentially bringing rains to parts of Luzon and the Visayas over the next 24 hours.

As of 3 a.m., the LPA inside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) was located 575 kilometers northeast of Itbayat, Batanes.

PAGASA Weather Specialist Obet Badrina said the LPA has a slim chance of developing into a tropical depression.

Meanwhile, the tropical depression outside the PAR was located 2,005 kilometers east-northeast of extreme northern Luzon.

Although it is almost stationary, the tropical depression is expected to move towards Japan in the next few days.

Badrina said both weather disturbances have no direct effect on any part of the country.

However, the southwest monsoon, or “habagat,” will bring cloudy weather with scattered rains and thunderstorms to Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro, and Palawan.

PAGASA warned of potential flash floods or landslides during moderate to heavy rains in these areas.

Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the habagat may also affect Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Bicol Region, and the Visayas.

Similar conditions are expected in the rest of the country due to localized thunderstorms.

The public is also warned of possible flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorms.

Badrina said the habagat may continue to affect western Luzon, particularly Bataan, Zambales, and Ilocos Region, in the coming days.
