The Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Tabaco in Albay have signed an agreement to build the first modified green Tourist Rest Area (TRA) in the Bicol region.
Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco said the project is envisioned as a significant step towards sustainable tourism development in the area.
The memorandum of agreement was signed by Frasco and Tabaco City Mayor Cielo Krisel Lagman on Wednesday, July 31, at Hiraya Manawari Nature Park.
Frasco said the TRA is expected to set a national standard with eco-friendly features such as solar panel roofing and a rainwater collection system. She underscored the facility's pioneering status and emphasized its role as a comprehensive service center.
Aside from clean restrooms, charging stations, and an information hub, Frasco said the TRA will cater to diverse needs, featuring amenities such as a lounge area and a dedicated lactation room.
Additionally, it will be fully accessible, with accommodations for people with disabilities and senior citizens.
"The development of this TRA reflects our commitment to enhancing visitor experiences while advancing sustainable tourism practices," Frasco said.
“Tabaco City is a symbol of sustainable tourism, in line with the National Tourism Development Plan, which underscores the importance of preserving our destinations and empowering local communities through tourism,” she added.
The TRA project, which uses materials and practices tailored to the region's climatic conditions, is part of a larger national strategy championed by the Marcos administration to improve tourism infrastructure in the Philippines.
Fully funded by the DOT through the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), the initiative underscores a collaborative effort between the national government and local communities to boost tourism and improve the overall quality of life.
